Content GuideLines

Thank you for your interest in contributing to the REN Community content section! Below, you will find a number of guidelines and pointers to get you started with the process of getting your article published within the REN Community site.

Who can contribute?

All REN Community members can contribute to the website using the comments section below each article on the website and/or write the main contents of articles published on the REN Community. However, in order to maintain a certain level of quality and give our members the chance to network and help each other along the way, we reserve the right to refuse contributions by non-members and/or companies seeking to contribute content for commercial purposes. (See also “What do we not publish”)

What do we publish?

Content

Generally speaking, you can contribute to two distinct parts of our editorial content: the Comments Section and the Main Article.

The Main Articles provides readers with factual information about the real estate market in Nigeria and also provides information on how to find, manage, invest in and let or sell real estate. It also provides a forum for our members to network, ask questions and interact. Topics include, but are not limited to, renting, buying, investing, selling, letting planning, property management and even starting up a property business.

Your contribution to the content could be about specific experience you have in starting up or setting your own property business, or contain more general musings about managing and letting properties.

Contributions to the Content should be specific, detailed, and of course correct and up to date. Please name the sources you used during the preparation of your article.

Language and Style

Your guest post should correspond in style, tone and length to other posts on the website. All articles preferably should be written in English. The standard length of our articles is 500+ words per page. We do not have a maximum article length.

A few pointers as to our writing style:

  • matter-of-fact
  • clear and easy to understand (as you know, not all our members can read yoruba)
  • ranging from slightly formal to slightly casual in tone; contributions to the content on the site can be on the colloquial side
  • mostly neutral and descriptive rather than opinionated or judgmental

One of our content editors will then edit your final version, if necessary. We will of course make sure not to change your personal style of writing too drastically. However, please understand that some changes might be necessary so as to make sure the article adheres to our publication guidelines.

Illustrations

If you have any photos to illustrate your entry, we will be happy to publish them too. The more accurately your pictures show what you are writing about, the better – for example, a picture relating to the event you are describing in your article. Pictures used on the website can be of a more general or symbolic nature.

  • Please only use pictures that you took yourself or which you are permitted to use for this purpose and in adherence to our General Terms and Conditions.
  • Avoid pictures that focus on a registered trademark.
  • When your picture depicts a person that is not you, you will need that person’s permission to use the picture. (Pictures of large groups of people are an exception.)
  • Please do not use pictures of children (unless the children in the picture are your own).
  • The minimum size for pictures is 652×318 pixels.

If you cannot find a suitable picture, please let us know and we will take care of the matter.

Author Bio

The author bio can be found at the bottom of each member-contributed article and includes a link to your profile. The author bio should be between 160 and 300 characters, and contain some basic information about where you are based, what you do and what you are interested in.

This is an example from one of our former Content & Communications interns:

OmoAwe is a Marketing consultant for RealEstatesNigeria.com . He grew up in Scotland and also studied at Henry Grammar School, and now resides in Germany.

Of course, you are not obligated to include everything (especially if it’s information you don’t feel comfortable providing) but you should give other REN Community members an impression of who you are. Remember that, while you can mention your profession, the author bio is no place to advertise your services.

What do we not publish?

While we are open to a wide range of ideas, there are some things we do NOT publish within the REN Community.
These include:

  • Content previously published or copy-pasted from other websites
  • So-called advertorials or promotional articles
  • Political propaganda
  • Racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic or otherwise discriminatory content
  • Pornography or sexually suggestive content
  • Content which promotes violence

We reserve the right to decline submissions for reasons other than the ones mentioned above. Remember that the final decision concerning the acceptance of member contributions lies within the responsibility of the Content & Communications Department.

Please understand that we do not include links to businesses or personal blogs in our articles (including the author bio). If you want to become an advertising partner instead, please contact us using this form

How can you contribute?

There are several steps to contributing an article to the website:

  1. Tell us what you had in mind and which information you can provide.
  2. We will get back to you and let you know if your suggestion fits our content or if some adjustments are needed.
  3. Send us a draft of your article (including an author bio).
  4. A member of the Content & Communications Department will proofread your article. If anything is unclear, major changes are necessary, or your article has been declined, we will get in touch with you.
  5. If everything is alright, we will notify you as soon as your article has been published.

What happens next?

Your article will clearly be marked as a guest contribution, and we will include a link to your REN Community profile and a short author biography (one or two sentences) at the end of the article, if you wish. Optionally, you can also state if you are open to any questions from other members on your topic of expertise.

If you are interested in submitting content on a regular basis, we might be able to offer you a spot as an approved contributor. Ideally, a regular contributor would supply one article per month. Please let us know in advance whether or not you plan on contributing regularly, and what topics you would like to write about, if possible.

Payment Details.

If you choose to buy any of our services or products, you will either pay through Stripe or PayPal. You may need to give personal information and authorization to obtain information from various credit services.

No bank or card details are stored by us! We don’t have them. The only information we keep on our site about your transaction is how much you’ve spent and whether or not, you paid with Stripe or PayPal.

Again here, We do not share, sell, lend or lease any of the information that uniquely identify you as subscriber (such as email addresses or personal details) with anyone except to the extent it is necessary to process transactions or provide services that you have requested.

Email Information

If you choose to correspond with us through email, we may retain the content of your email messages together with your email address and our responses.

We provide the same protections for these electronic communications that we employ in the maintenance of information received by mail and telephone.

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automatic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Contact Forms

Similar to other commercial Web sites, our Web site utilizes a standard technology called “cookies”and web server log files to collect information about how our Web site is used.

This is to enable us to continue to provide a better service for our customers.

The Information we gather through cookies and Web server logs may include the date and time of visits, the pages viewed, time spent at our Web site, and the Web sites visited just before and just after our Web site.

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you have an account and you log in to this site, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.

Embedded Content From Other Websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracing your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

IP Addresses

IP addresses are used by your computer every time you are connected to the Internet.

Your IP address is a number that is used by computers on the network to identify your computer.

IP addresses are automatically collected by our web server as part of demographic and profile data known as traffic data so that data (such as the Web pages you request) can be sent to you.

Other Web Sites Linked To Our Web Site

We are not responsible for the practices employed by other Web sites linked to or from our Web site or the information or content contained therein.

Often links to other Web sites are provided solely as pointers to information on topics that may be useful to the users of our Web site.

Please remember that when you use a link to go from our Website to another web site, our Privacy Policy is no longer in effect.

Your browsing and interaction on any other web site, including web sites, which have a link on our Website, is subject to that Web site’s own rules and policies.

Please read over their own rules and policies before proceeding.

Analytics

Google Analytics, Facebook tracking pixels and probably some stuff we don’t even know is happening like web tracking stats done by the server.

You can read the appropriate privacy policies on their pages, they are probably written in more legal speak than this and they will almost certainly bore you senseless.

If you don’t want Facebook tracking pixels then do your own research about how to block them.

None of these things store any really personal data about you. They probably get your IP address which apparently is now considered “personal data” but as far as we are aware knowing your IP is pretty useless.

How Do We Use the Information That You Provide to Us?

Broadly speaking, we use the information you provide us with for;

  • Administering our business activities,
  • Providing the products and services you requested,
  • To process your payment,

You may notify us at any time if you do not wish to receive these offers by emailing us at the link provided on the newsletter.

Using Cookies, in conjunction with our Web server’s log files, allow us to safely calculate the aggregate number of people visiting our Web site and which parts of the site are most popular.

This helps us not only to gather information that will enable us to constantly improve our Web site but also to ensure you enjoy your browsing process and that we can provide the materials that you need or that a lot of customers are requesting for.

We may also disclose account information when we have reason to believe that disclosing this information is necessary to identify, contact or bring legal action against someone who may be violating our “Terms of Service” or to protect the safety of our users and the Public.

How Long Do We Retain Your Data For?

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile.

All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

You must note though, that if we are asked to delete personal data that we hold on you, you might not be able to access anything you purchased from us via the web anymore because the member systems we use need to have your name and email address to function correctly.

Our Commitment To Data Security:

The laws on holding personal data in the United Kingdom may be less stringent than the laws of your Country of residence or citizenship.
